![]() Spotlight on Anderson Valley: Located more than 100 miles north of San Francisco, the wine producing reputation of this beautiful, remote valley has been steadily climbing for decades. Mendocino's cooler climate, once thought best for only apples, pears and berries, has proven to be wonderful for many wine grape varieties. Its windswept coastline and miles of winding roads through majestic redwoods, just three hours from San Francisco, are show stoppers. There is no mystery why this California wine region, one end of the California wine country rainbow, shelters more artists per square foot than any other county in the state. These wine areas lie mostly in the southeastern half of the county. Top Wine Varietals: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay For a California wine label to display an appellation name, 85% of the fruit in the wine must come from that appellation. No surprise, Napa Valley is the original California AVA. The distinct “persona” is mainly categorized by climate, geology and elevation. Each American Viticulture Area has a distinct “persona” that divides it from the other AVAs. AVAs show off the diversity and quality of the wine region. These are delimited, geographical grape-growing areas that have officially been given appellation status by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Lets dig in to California's AVA's: California wine country currently has 139 American Viticultural areas or AVAs. Chardonnay is the most widely planted white grape and Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted red grape. California wine regions run the length of the state, and wine grapes are grown in 49 of California's 58 counties.
